INTERSECTING PATHS
INDIGENOUS TRAILS IN MODERN PROVIDENCE
MEETING PLACE
MARKING A PATH FOR PAUSE AND REFLECTION
Providence Innovation District Park hosts the community as they play, work, commute, and relax. With our concept, Studio Luz & SCJ creates a moment of pause; a new meeting of the current trails of people from different neighborhoods in Providence to bring their full selves to this place, exchange, and take something new back with them. We ensured that this space would be accessible to all people through a lens of universal design.
ADDITION + SUBTRACTION
SIMPLE FORMAL MOVES FOR AN EXCITING SPACE
Our design features excavated ribbons within the landscape of the plaza, symbolizing the exposition of voices that are often silenced. Lifting above, and sometimes out of, these excavations are physical depictions of historic native trails, peeling up to create a moment of pause. Together, the undulations and overhead trails create physical space; a place of exchange for the community.
about the department of art,
culture, and tourism
In Providence
Providence, Rhode Island’s Department of Art, Culture, and Tourism supports development of their vibrant city by supporting its many cultures and creative arts through public programming. It is their mission to showcase the city as an international cultural destination. As part of this effort, ACT commissions public art and public events throughout the city, which includes partnerships with schools and libraries, festivals, lectures, and grants.
Studio Luz Architects partnered with Studio Cooke John Architecture + Design to respond to one of these calls, using our shared values, including establishing meaningful connections between architecture and society, to design a striking monument inviting the community to pause, reflect, learn, and exchange ideas.
