Cotswald Residence

Brookline, MA

Interior renovation
Completion: 2017

Project Overview

Studio Luz’s design strategy for the Cotswald Residence plays between the existing features of the traditional home and new renovations. The initial project scope examined how private spaces such as the primary bed & bath, children’s rooms, and guest room connect with the new family room and spaces where the family comes together.

BETWEEN THE TRADITIONAL AND THE CONTEMPORARY

CONNECTING SOCIAL SPACES

Our design strategy examines the traditional elements of a single family home, reconsidering their spatial organization to connect social spaces within the home, while carving out nooks of privacy. A more homogeneous materiality creates a warm, inviting backdrop for expression through furnishings and decor.

CONNECTIVE THREAD

RECONCEPTUALIZE THE ORGANIZATION, HARMONIOUS RELATIONSHIPS

Studio Luz considered a new connective thread to unify the new with the existing, opportunities emerged to re-conceptualize the organization of the living spaces to create harmonious relationships. The game room became the primary suite, the old office space transformed into a new family and entertainment room.

ALL IN THE DETAILS

LAYERED PLYWOOD END GRAIN, CASEWORK

Studio Luz deployed these new details to create a series of layered thresholds both figuratively and physically to mark traditional spaces and function. Layered plywood end grain plays on existing rhythms and marks new spaces and functions. Highly detailed casework weaves through the halls and living spaces as a connective tissue with subtle plays on rhythm, material and light.

About the Single Family Residence

In Brookline

Our design for this single family residence threads new connections with existing residential vocabulary. These subtle and specific moves, such as the use of existing door handles, allow for legibility and playful hints as a person transitions between the traditional home and newly renovated spaces.
