16 RONALD STREET
Boston, MA
Multi-Unit Elderly Housing Proposal 36,974 sf
Completion: 2016
Project Overview
Our 16 Ronald Street proposal is a response to the City of Boston’s request for the development of a city-owned parcel for dedicated-elderly affordable rental apartments. Our design consists of two and three story multifamily homes along an internal public street, or axis, inviting the neighborhood to interact with the building and their neighbors, while bringing a smaller scale feel to the building.

spatial variety
unit types
Our design includes a mixture of unit types within its two building, 58-unit organization. We included studio apartments, single bedroom units, and a multi-purpose room for residents to use for a variety of needs, including socializing with their neighbors and establishing community within the two buildings.
public thoroughfare
bringing the street in
Studio Luz organized our design along a public interior “street”, extending the lines of Morse Street. This axis invites the existing neighborhood into the new community, while giving the residents a central axis to connect with their neighbors.
outdoor space
prioritizing the landscape
The exterior environment of this proposal integrates many opportunities for outdoor activity for the wellbeing of its residents. In addition to the interior street, residents can enjoy green space, walking paths, and raised deck space.
About the Request for Proposals
IN BOSTON, MA
In winter of 2015, the City of Boston announced a Request For Proposals (RFP) from the Department of Neighborhood Development (DND), based on community input, for the development of a city-owned parcel in Dorchester, Boston, MA. The RFP tasked developers and designers to propose multi-unit, affordable rental elderly housing for the site, which is close to the commuter rail.
Together with VietAAID & Codman Square NDC, Studio Luz submitted a proposal for a 58-unit development that is deeply integrated with the neighborhood, providing various sizes of apartments along a public axis.
