A modern accessory dwelling unit for a historic single-family residence
Project Overview
A local family purchased this single family residence in a transition from apartment living to owning a home, and asked Studio Luz to design an affordable ADU — an accessory dwelling unit — that could be used for additional rental income. Studio Luz worked to strike a balance between respecting the historical context of monument square, and providing a lively modern aesthetic in this dynamic, diverse Jamaica Plain community.

CONTEXTUAL AND RESPONSIVE
The design team took on the challenge of respecting the historical monument square by blending the front entrance with its context while providing a modern facade aesthetic for the hidden rear ADU.
MODERN DWELLER
MODEST AND MODERN ADU living
The new residential construction is a modest and modern 1180 square feet home attached to an existing single family residence. ADUs, like this one, offer an alternative path toward more widely available affordable housing and wealth building for families.
Eco-conscious
FOSSIL FUEL FREE, PHOTOVOLTAIC, and WIND ENERGY
The home prioritizes sustainability in its design, utilizing photovoltaic solar and wind sourced electrical services, energy recovery for lighting and appliances as well as water collection for outdoor irrigation.
About the single family residence
In Jamaica Plain
The new residential construction is a modest and modern Accessory Dwelling Unit situated in Boston’s dynamic Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Our team worked to respect the original historical context of the home while creating a modern, sustainable rear ADU to give the family potential for rental income and add density to the street.
