About the Space

In Roxbury

Sociedad Latina is a Boston-based organization that supports Latinx communities through mentorship and civic engagement, workforce development, arts and culture access, academic assistance, and family support. The challenge was to transform the organization’s headquarters, located in a traditional three-story apartment building, into a dynamic multi-use space. Studio Luz employed a participatory design process to adapt the building’s spaces to support the organization’s multifaceted mission. The design deconstructed the historical compartmentalized interiors and opened spaces to provide flexibility with use and programming over time. Open and flexible partitions, multi-use STEM maker/learning spaces, an audio recording studio, private counseling spaces, office spaces for staff, and a new large gathering area for performance and cultural events all support the mission of Sociedad Latina. The new architecture of this building provides the spatial framework for creating the next generations of Latinx leaders.
